Write a cover letter that adds context

A strong cover letter should not duplicate your resume line by line. It should explain why this specific role fits your background, highlight the evidence most relevant to the job description, and give hiring teams a faster reason to keep reading.

  • Open with a role-specific hook instead of repeating the first line of your resume summary.
  • Use one or two concrete examples that connect your experience to the employer’s needs.
  • Close with a clear reason you want that team, company, or mission, not just any job in the category.

This is also the best place to address career changes, relocation, motivation for the company, or details that make more sense in prose than in bullet points.
